What Are Metal Partial Dentures?
Metal partial dentures, also known as chrome dentures, are a traditional option for tooth replacement. These dentures are made from a medical-grade metal alloy. Metal partial dentures are known for their strength and durability, which in turn makes them long lasting. Chrome dentures are known for providing a more accurate fit.
What Are Metal Partial Dentures Used For?
Primarily, metal partial dentures are used to replace multiple missing teeth. They can be slightly more expensive than acrylic dentures, but over a lifespan, very cost effective. They are made from metal alloy materials that are strong and built to withstand many years of wear and tear!
The materials use in metal partial dentures makes them suited for long-term tooth replacement needs, and they're also easier to add to and repair compared to metal-free dentures.
Metal Partial Dentures FAQs
Would you like to learn a little more about metal partial dentures? Let’s answer some frequently asked questions about this popular form of dentures:
Are Metal Partial Dentures Noticeable When I Smile?
This depends on a few different factors like the design. Sometimes clasps can be seen, but we always try to make them discreet. If you are concerned about whether your metal partial dentures will be noticeable, give our team a call for more information.
How Do I Care for My Metal Partial Dentures?
Keep them clean by brushing daily with a soft denture brush and soaking them in a denture cleaner. Don’t use toothpaste. Just like with any dentures, avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage them.
How Durable Are Metal Partial Dentures?
Metal partial dentures are known for their strength. They’re made to withstand daily wear and tear, making them a long-lasting choice. With proper care, you can expect them to serve you well for decades.
Will Metal Partial Dentures Feel Heavy in My Mouth?
Chrome dentures are lighter and thinner than acrylic denture, traditional dentures. Peek will be lighter but might be a little bulkier.
Are Metal (Chrome) Dentures Better Than Acrylic Dentures?
Yes, generally speaking, we think so.
Where possible we recommend chrome partial dentures for our patients. They are slightly more expensive, but the strength, flexibility, comfort & precise fit of the denture is superior to acrylic (plastic) dentures.
The metal palate can be much thinner, lighter, and feel a lot better in the mouth, providing a more accurate fit.
Because metal is stronger than acrylic/plastic, the metal partial dentures can have less surface area and therefore feel smaller, fit really well, and are much stronger.
Acrylic dentures generally are a bit thicker and larger and not quite as strong as metal partial dentures.
What Are The Best Partial Dentures To Get?
We think that metal dentures are the best because they are thinner and stronger.
Having said that, we make a lot of very high-quality acrylic partial dentures, it just depends on each person’s individual teeth, mouth, financial circumstances, and preferences. Our job is to find the right denture option that suits you.
Can I repair metal denture?
Absolutely! Chrome dentures can definitely be repaired. With today’s technology, particularly laser welding, these dentures can be repaired and even added to if needed
Can I add a tooth to a metal denture?
On average, we can add a tooth to your chrome dentures, but bear in mind this depends on a few different factors, like the condition of the tooth, position and other considerations. Contact our denture professionals to discuss.
Can I reline a metal denture?
Yes, metal dentures can be relined.
How long do chrome dentures last?
Chrome dentures can last a long time, some even more than 50 years! If you look after your chrome dentures you can expect them to last a long time.
What Are PEEK Dentures?
PEEK dentures are a non metal or metal free alternative to acrylic & chrome dentures. Made from Polyetheretherketone, which has excellent biocompatibility and bone-like properties.
Peek is high grade polymer often used in other medical procedures like skull replacement & hip replacements.
PEEK dentures are known for their aesthetic appeal, offering a more natural appearance compared to traditional metal dentures.
What Are Peek Dentures Used For?
PEEK dentures are mainly chosen for their aesthetic advantages. They are ideal for those who are concerned about the visibility of metal clasps in their partial dentures and want a more natural-looking solution.
Their colour-matching ability makes them less obvious and more attractive than other forms of dentures.
Additionally, their biocompatibility makes them suitable for people with sensitivities to certain metals.
