Denture FAQ’s

What Type Of Dentures Do I Need?

There are two types of dentures - partial dentures and full dentures. We will consult with you to determine which ones will work best for you.

A partial denture attaches to your natural teeth with metal clasps or precision attachments. This means you may be able to keep some teeth.

How Long Will It Take To Have My Dentures Made And Fitted?

This depends on the type of denture. It takes approximately 3-4 weeks for full lower and upper dentures to be made.

Partial dentures will also take 3-4 weeks, however, partial chrome dentures will take 4 weeks to be made.

Once you have your initial consultation with Darius, we will pre-book all of your remaining appointments. You will know exactly when your denture will be issued.

How Many Appointments Do I Need To Make?

Generally speaking, usually our patients need 4 appointments. After your initial consult, we like to book all your appointments in advance.

Our lovely ladies at the front desk are super helpful when it comes to doing this.

We can't give you an exact price - as much as we would love to! What we can tell you is what our prices start from $1,170 for partial dentures.

A full denture starts from $2,250.

A full upper and full lower denture starts from $3,800.

Is Getting Dentures Painful?

No.

There is no pain involved in the procedure and we will go to every length to ensure that the experience with us is a pleasant one.

Our staff are kind, funny & caring and you will always feel looked after.

Will My Dentures Need To Be Replaced?

Dentures will need to be relined, rebased or remade after a while. This amount of time will vary for each individual.

Over time dentures become loose and can cause significant signs of wear to your natural teeth. If you have loose dentures, it impacts your ability to chew which significantly effects digestion of food.

The fit of a denture can change due to a number of factors such as:

ageing; and bone or gums either receding or shrinking.

It's important to replace your dentures when this occurs to ensure no immediate or long term damage is done to your mouth.

What Is The Denture Making Process?

You will usually need approximately four appointments spaced approximately a week apart from each other.

Appointment 1

You will have a consultation we will determine the type of denture required for your mouth. We can provide you with a quote and take impressions.

We will discuss your requirements, aesthetics and long term options.

I explain the what to expect and give you lots of information about the high quality dental materials and teeth that we use.

Appointment 2

This is where we take the second impressions with a custom tray and check your bite register.

We colour match your existing teeth and/or select individual teeth.

We look at different tooth shapes and sizes and we make the best choices together.

Appointment 3

We let you put the "Try in" denture in your mouth. The denture is made from wax and allows you to feel and see what it will be like.

We make changes and do our fine tuning at this appointment.

Colour, shape and size of teeth are confirmed. If you require more time, we do allow our patients to take the wax try-in denture home.

Appointment 4

At your final appointment your dentures will be issued to you and we explain the care and maintenance of your new dentures.

We make any fine adjustments that are required and make sure the denture fits your mouth really well.

This is the appointment where you feel ALL SMILES !

Adjustments

Any minor adjustments can be done in the following weeks and this is all included in your final denture price - there are no further charges for minor adjustments.

How Long Should I Wear The Dentures For?

Often you will need to wear the dentures all the time to begin with to work out if any adjustments are needed. After the adjustments you usually take the dentures out before you go to bed and put them in again the next morning.

We will discuss your individual needs with you.

Will I Be Able To Speak Clearly With My Dentures?

At first it may be difficult to speak clearly but this will improve rapidly. It's best to practice speaking words out loud that are hard to pronounce.

Will My Dentures Need Adjusting?

Your dentures will need to be relined to ensure they don't become loose.

Usually between 3-5 years or 6mths after extractions.

It is important to maintain a good fit.

When a denture no longer fits properly it can cause sores or infections, and also can lead to bone loss.

Can I Adjust My Own Dentures?

No.

Do not attempt to adjust the denture yourself as it can cause irreparable damage, you may need new dentures. It is best to let the professionals do it.

How Do I Care For My Mouth And Remaining Teeth?

You must brush your teeth twice daily, cleaning between your teeth to prevent decay and periodontal disease.

The teeth that are under the dentures metal clasps must be paid extra attention as plaque can become trapped under the clasps, increasing the risk of tooth decay.

Do you do emergency Denture Repairs?

Yes. We definitely do. Every day we set aside appts for repairs. We will always try out best to get you in to have your denture repaired as soon as humanly possible!

How Long Will It Take Me To Get Used To Wearing Dentures?

Your dentures may feel uncomfortable for the first few weeks while you get used to them. As every denture is hand made, it takes time for your mouth to get used to the feel and function.

We help you throughout this phase with minor adjustments and support. We care about you and want your dentures to fit really well.

Will It Be Difficult To Eat With My New Dentures?

Initially it may be difficult to eat, as your mouth is still getting used to the feel of the denture and your muscles take time to adjust.

Start with soft foods and make sure to chew evenly on each side.

Avoid hard and sticky foods for example, lollies & toffees and chewing gum.

Over a short period of time, it should become easier once you are used to the dentures.

Honestly, there are so many types of dentures, some are easier to manage than others.

Darius will be able to give you more information based on your individual mouth and denture needs.

How Do I Take Care Of My Dentures?

You will need to brush your dentures daily, just like teeth, to ensure food and plaque is removed and to reduce the chance of stains.

You can use a brush with soft bristles and soap or mild dishwashing liquid.

Do not use toothpaste, it is too harsh and should be avoided.

When you remove your dentures, store them in soaking solution or water.

Should I Use Denture Adhesive?

Denture adhesive can provide additional retention for well fitting dentures but it must not be used for old ill-fitting dentures.

Call us and we will be able to tell you if your dentures are loose.

Do I need to see a Dentist for a Referral to Have Dentures Made ?

No.

You can get dentures made with a prosthetist without seeing a dentist. We often work closely with dentists, so referrals are not required but are welcome!

If you have not seen a dentist for a long time, we will often recommend you see a dentist to check your complete oral health. It’s important to check the health and longevity of any remaining or existing teeth.

What qualifications do dental prosthetists have?

Dental prosthetists have completed a Diploma of Dental Prosthetics or a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology. They are registered with the Dental Board of Australia and are subject to the same registration requirements, guidelines, and codes of practice as other members of the dental team.
