Thinking about replacing your dentures? Don’t replace your dentures, try getting a reline!

Relining a denture is a procedure that allows you to replace the base of your denture and get rid of any discomfort from dentures. Some people might thing they need to replace their dentures, but all they might need is a reline!

Over time, it’s normal for dentures to become loose and ill fitting. This happens to a lot of people for various reasons.

Signs You Might Need A Reline

Here are some of the indications you might need to reline your dentures:

  1. Your denture feels loose;

  2. You are finding food underneath your denture;

  3. Random sore spots that might even move around and change places;

Some of the most common reasons that your denture no longer fits nice and snug is because as we age, our mouth naturally shrinks and changes shape. Your gums might start changing in shape slightly, which will in turn mean that your denture won’t fit the way that it used to.

Some people experience changes in the mouth more dramatically than others. We know that gum and bone shrinkage can happen when people have been unwell or lost a lot of weight.

What Is a Denture Reline and Why Do I Need One?

A denture reline is the process where a new impression of your mouth is taken and a new base is created for your existing denture.

We refit the inside of the denture on the tissue surface of your mouth.

We take an impression of your mouth. We make a new base that will fill in the gaps caused by shrinkage, bone loss and changes in the mouth.

What Types of Relines Are There?

There are three types of relines:

  1. Soft Reline

  2. Hard Reline (Standard Reline)

  3. Temporary Soft Reline

What Is a Soft Denture Reline?

Soft relining is a great option for people with thin or especially sensitive gums because the risk of future irritation will be much lower.

Soft relines tend to be a little less durable and require more care than normal denture bases and hard relines.

What to expect:

  • This will involve 2 appointments on the same day.

  • We will take an impression on the morning appointment.

  • On the afternoon appointment, we fit the denture and make sure it feels good.

What Is a Standard Denture Reline?

We know everyone hates being without their teeth so we try to make this happen as quickly as we can.

What to expect:

  • This will involve 2 appointments on the same day.

  • We will take an impression on the morning appointment.

  • On the afternoon appointment, we fit the denture and make sure it feels good.

What Is a Temporary Soft Reline?

This reline material is a super soft material that will adapt to the changes in the mouth, especially perfect for people who have immediate dentures and extractions. This temporary soft reline is sometimes known as a tissue conditioner.

What to expect:

This procedure is done while you’re in the chair, and it’s an approximately a 1-hour appointment.

How Often Should I Have A Denture Reline?

We recommend having denture relines every 3-5 years. It will depend from person to person though! We all age differently, so some people might need a reline sooner!

As soon as your denture feels like it’s not fitting properly, we recommend seeing your dental prosthetist so that they can assess what’s going on in your mouth!

What is the Difference Between a Soft and Hard Denture Reline?

Firstly, the material is exactly as it sounds - Soft reline is softer than the normal reline base.

We use soft relines when dentures become too painful, when people have sensitive gums or dentures rest close to nerves.

How Long Do Soft Relines Last?

We generally tell our patients that they can expect 1-3 years.

Sometimes soft relines require more maintenance and a slightly different, more gentle cleaning regime.

Soft relines are not quite as durable as hard relines.

How Long Do Hard Relines Last?

We generally tell our patients that they can expect 3-5 years.

Hard relines are more like the normal denture base.

Immediate Dentures & Relines

Within the first 6 months of having your teeth extracted and a new immediate denture made, you will need a reline.

Sometimes after immediate extractions, there can be so much bone shrinkage. Our bones and gums shrink at a pace that is unique to each person. We have no idea if it will happen fast or dramatically or if it might barely change for you.

Time will tell.

If you feel like your denture is no longer fitting well and you’re uncomfortable, it might be time to book in for a reline.

A reline is a quick an easy way to make the denture comfortable
