7 Signs You Might Need New Dentures
If you notice any of these signs, it might be time to consider talking to your dental prosthetist about getting new dentures.
Food gets stuck under your denture.
Your teeth are worn down and no longer touch.
The dentures are stained and difficult to clean.
The dentures don't look as good as they used to.
The denture teeth are chipped.
You experience frequent sore spots and gum irritation that move around.
Your dentures feel loose and may slip out while talking or eating.
How Do I Eat With My New Dentures
Here are some tips for eating with new dentures:
Take it slow: It takes time to get used to the feel of new dentures.
Chew on both sides: Distribute pressure evenly by chewing on both sides of your mouth.
Start with soft foods: Start with soft foods and gradually work up to harder textures.
Cut food into smaller pieces: Cut food into smaller pieces to make it easier to chew.
Chew slowly: Chew slowly and use both sides of your mouth to distribute pressure evenly.
Avoid sticky or hard foods initially: Avoid sticky or hard foods initially, such as lollies.
Rinse your mouth and clean your dentures after eating: This helps to prevent food particles from getting stuck under the dentures.
How Long Does It Take to Get Used to New Dentures?
It's normal for new dentures to feel strange at first, and your mouth may need some time to adjust. While Darius makes sure your new dentures fit, they may still require slight adjustments in the first week or two while they settle into place.
If you experience minor sore spots or tenderness, they usually heal within a day or so. However, if soreness persists, it's best to make an appointment with Darius. If you've left your dentures out due to soreness, wearing them for at least 24 hours before your appointment can help your dental prosthetist pinpoint the problem area.
How Do I Clean My New Dentures?
It is important to keep your dentures clean to maintain good oral health, as they can attract plaque, become stained, and collect food particles that can cause bad breath or irritate your gums.
Here are a few tips from Darius on how to clean your new dentures:
We recommend that you clean your dentures twice a day using mild soap or dishwashing liquid. Avoid using toothpaste. Using toothpaste on your dentures can be damaging as it is too harsh and can strip the enamel and colour from them.
If you remove your dentures when going to sleep, you need to soak them in water. Your dentures may lose their shape if you don’t keep them moist.
Put a towel over the sink when brushing your dentures. This will prevent your dentures from breaking in case you accidentally drop them.
Use denture brushes that are specifically made for denture cleaning. These brushes are soft and effective. You can purchase denture brushes from our reception desk.
Invest in ultrasonic cleaners to help keep your dentures clean. We sell mini ultrasonic denture cleaners. See the lovely ladies at reception for more information.
