Bleeding Gums, Gum Disease & Partial Dentures
The gums serve as the foundation of your teeth, which is why maintaining their health is essential. This is especially true for those with partial dentures, who need to ensure healthy gums to retain their remaining original teeth and prevent other diseases from occurring.
Gum disease can make wearing partial dentures uncomfortable due to the pain experienced when the dentures press against the infected or inflamed gums. It is important for those with partial dentures to remain vigilant against gum disease.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, occurs when an infection affects the tissues surrounding and supporting your teeth.
Gum disease is usually caused by a build-up of plaque on teeth and along the gum line. Plaque is a sticky coating containing bacteria. The immune system tries to get rid of plaque with an inflammation response. This is seen as redness and swelling of the gum around the tooth.

While this does include the gums, it also includes the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligaments.
Gum disease should not be ignored because, without treatment, it can destroy the bones supporting your teeth and cause tooth loss. This can in turn effect how your partial dentures fit.
Gum Disease Vs. Periodontitis
While these two terms are often used interchangeably, gum disease is more of an overarching term, whereas periodontitis is a subtype of gum disease. Let’s explore this further.
There are two stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.
What Is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and results when bacteria build up in the mouth.
The signs of gingivitis include:
red gums
inflamed gums
bleeding gums
swollen gums
The good news is that gingivitis can be reversed with proper oral hygiene, but it can progress to periodontitis if it is unaddressed.
What Is Periodontitis?
Periodontitis is a more advanced stage of gum disease where the gums pull away from the teeth, leading to the formation of pockets where bacteria can become trapped and cause infections. These infections can then damage the teeth and their supporting bones.
Why Are My Gums Bleeding?
Darius Northey, our Sunshine Coast Dental Prosthetist, explains that the first indications of gum disease might be a little bit of blood in your mouth when brushing your teeth or a little bit of redness around the gums.
These symptoms may mean two things: you need to clean a little better, or a little less harsh.
If you continue to notice bleeding or redness, it’s best to get advice from your dental prosthetist, dental specialist, or dental practitioner. You don’t want to leave bleeding gums unchecked, or you may have gum disease or even lose teeth.

Many people wear partial dentures but don’t realise how important it is to look after their remaining teeth and gums.
The gums of those with partial dentures are still susceptible to disease and damage.
Wobbly Loose Teeth & Partial Dentures
If your teeth are wobbly or loose, you should see a dental professional as you may have gum disease or periodontitis. In this case you may have to have more teeth removed before modifying your partial denture to accommodate these changes.
