What is a Denture Reline?
Denture relines are one of the most common types of denture repair. It involves replacing the base of your denture to make it fit the shape of your mouth more accurately. Over time, your mouth and gums change shape. Generally, you will have 2 appointments, morning and afternoon. First appointment, a new impression is taken. Second appointment, we make sure the denture fits as best it can. First, a new impression is taken, and then the new base is created to fit your existing denture.
Why Are Denture Relines Necessary?
Changes in your mouth's structure are inevitable. Everyone’s mouth changes at different rates, sometimes the shrinkage happens quickly for some people.
According to Better Health Victoria,
“Changes to the bone after the teeth are removed may cause the denture to become loose over time and it may need to be adjusted and 'relined' within a few months to improve the fit.” Better Health Victoria.
Changes in your mouth can lead to a number of different issues, including discomfort with having a loose denture, impacts on your lifestyle and eating habits as well as poor hygiene, with food particles becoming trapped under your denture. You might find yourself avoiding certain foods that are too hard to chew.
If any of the above sounds familiar to you, it may be a sign that you need to reline your dentures.
Types of Denture Relines
There are three main types of denture relines: hard relines, soft relines, and temporary relines. Each type has its unique benefits and is suited to different situations. Your dental prosthetist will recommend which type of reline is best suited to you.
Hard Relines
Hard relines are the most durable and long-lasting type of reline. They involve removing some of the acrylic material from the denture’s interior and replacing it with a new layer of acrylic.
1st appointment approx. 45 mins
2nd appointment approx. 20 mins
This type of reline provides a stable and secure fit, making it ideal for those who need a long-term solution. Hard relines generally last between 3 and 5 years.
Soft Relines
Soft relines use a flexible material that is more comfortable against the gums. This type is suitable for individuals with sensitive gums or those who experience discomfort with hard relines. Soft relines typically need to be replaced more frequently than hard relines but offer a gentler fit. You can generally expect soft relines to last for 1 to 3 years.
Temporary Relines
Temporary relines, also known as tissue conditioners, are used when the gums are too sore or inflamed for a permanent reline. This type provides a temporary solution to improve fit and comfort while allowing the gums to heal. Once the gums have healed, a hard or soft reline can be performed.
